COLUMBUS JCT., Iowa — A landscaping project around the city’s historic swinging bridge and new civic center may be helped by an $11,000 donation from the estate of a longtime Columbus Junction resident.

City officials suggested that the gift from the Sime Roundy Estate and the Roundy Foundation be combined with other grant funding for the project.

Mayor Dan Wilson said he talked with Roundy’s husband, Beryl, and his feedback was that a special, visible project would be the best use for the money.

Officials believe the gift may be continued in future years. Other local organizations that received bequests included the Columbus School District, library and two churches.

The Roundys donated $1 million toward the construction of a new elementary school in 1997.

In other action, several appointments to city boards, commissions and city council committees were made. Wilson said he planned to provide a summary of accomplishments and future goals at the next meeting.
