A Moline man who blew up his apartment building while trying to kill himself, instead killing three other people, pleaded guilty this morning in federal court to malicious arson.
William Henry VanDeWoestyne agreed to serve 20 years in prison for the explosion that caused the deaths of William Daugherty, 88; Lupe Irizarry, 69; and John Hansen Jr., 33.
VanDeWoestyne lived on the middle floor of the 12-unit building at 4341 26th Ave. He removed a gas nozzle, causing natural gas to leak into his apartment. Authorities believe that when the furnace started, it caused the apartment to explode in the early morning hours of March 4.
