Good morning, Quad-Cities on this the last day of the work week. It’s 33 degrees out there -- 22 degrees with wind chill -- under misty skies. What a difference a day makes. The Quad-Cities certainly dodged one yesterday. The Q-C proper received mostly rain with only a trace of snow. Indeed, the Q-C set a rainfall record for the day with daily maximum rainfall of 0.29 inches. That breaks the old mark of 0.23 inches set in 1974. Outer regions of the Quad-City area weren’t as fortunate and received as much as two inches of snow.
Today’s weather
It will be cloudy, with a high near 36 degrees. Wind gusts of up to 20 mph will make it seem considerably colder. Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 24 degrees. Source: National Weather Service.

Flood advisories lifted
The National Weather Service has lifted its flood advisory for the Wapsipinicon River in Clinton and Scott counties, the Iowa River in Louisa County and the Rock River in Whiteside and Rock Island counties. Although river levels continue to flirt with near-flood stage levels, levels are not expected to rise past flood stage.
IRS opens season for electronic tax filing
Taxpayers who file their returns electronically may begin sending those files today, the Internal Revenue Service says.
The tax agency encourages taxpayers to file electronically, either through tax preparers or through computers using tax preparation software. It said those using e-file who choose direct deposit can receive refunds in as little as 10 days, while those who owe taxes can file now and pay later.
Last year nearly 80 million returns, almost 57 percent of the total, were filed electronically. The agency cautions that as many as 13.5 million taxpayers who use five forms related to the alternative minimum tax will have to wait until around Feb. 11 before filing.
In December, after the IRS had prepared its forms for the 2008 filing season, Congress enacted legislation to shield some 20 million taxpayers from getting hit by the AMT, which originally was aimed at only a small number of very rich people. The IRS says it needs the additional time to reprogram systems to comply with the new law.
The agency also reports that taxpayers using the IRS Free File program, now in its sixth year, can begin filing today. The program, for taxpayers having an adjusted gross income of $54,000 or less, is run by the IRS and a consortium of tax preparation software companies.
