Governor signs special education funding law

SPRINGFIELD — Gov. Rod Blagojevich has signed a measure aimed at helping more than 200 Illinois school districts offset possible losses in special education funding.
But lawmakers last year failed to approve legislation to pay for the program, raising questions about whether the governor’s action will result in any cash for schools.
The governor signed House Bill 4148 without comment Tuesday evening.
The amount, an estimated
$21 million, is designed to make sure school districts lose no money for special education services because of a change in the funding formula. Some districts will gain money through a new formula, but 225 will lose.
The Williamson County Special Education District, for example, is looking to make up a $1.3 million shortfall.
