KEWANEE, Ill. — A standoff between Kewanee police and an armed 28-year-old man Tuesday prompted the evacuation of Wethersfield Elementary School, which was two blocks from the scene, Kewanee Police Chief Jim Dison said.
Dison said police received a report at 1:36 p.m. that the man had taken a firearm from the home of his parents and left after making threats about hurting himself and others.
The man’s vehicle was located at a residence in the 300 block of Dwight Street. Attempts were made to contact the man, and officers surrounded the residence, Dison said.
Officers began alerting and evacuating nearby residents and the Wethersfield School District was notified not to release any students from the school without taking safety precautions.
Kewanee Schools also were alerted and told bus drivers to avoid the area, Dison said.
The Henry County Special Operations Squad, comprised of officers from Kewanee, Geneseo and Colona police departments and Henry County Sheriff’s Department, responded and continued to try to get in touch with the man.
About 6 p.m., the Special Operations Squad entered the residence and found the man, who was taken into custody without incident, Dison said.
The man, whose name was not released, was being held Tuesday night in the Henry County Jail. No formal charges have been filed.
