Jay Bryner says his favorite sport is politics.
“I really don’t pay attention to football or basketball,” he said.
The head of housekeeping at Deere & Co. in Moline, Bryner said he was ready for the Iowa caucuses to begin.
A self-described Republican with libertarian leanings, Bryner said he was in heaven Thursday at Davenport North High School, where 12 precincts were holding Republican
caucuses.
“I had a great time,” he said, and his man, Mitt Romney, won the precinct, D84, in which he voted.
Linda Greenlee, secretary of precinct D84, said she was expecting about 20 people.
“We had 74 people in our precinct show up,” said Holly Swafford, who voted in D84. “You could tell they weren’t expecting that many people.”
Molly Daly, 18, participated in her first caucus. “My parents are into politics and it got me interested because they were interested,” she said. “I’m excited about the chance to participate and vote.”
At the end of the night Daly, who voted in precinct D84, was happy because Romney won.
“A lot of the things I believe in personally match his beliefs,” she said of Romney.
Mike Huckabee won the votes of precinct D73 with 32 votes, while Romney got 31 votes.
Barney Barnhill, Davenport’s 7th Ward alderman and temporary D73 precinct chairman, said it was the biggest caucus turnout he ever had seen.
