We know who the first baby born in the Quad-Cities this year is.
Well, we know who her parents are.
But as of 8 p.m. today, they still haven’t come up with a name for their new daughter.
The baby girl was born at 3:16 p.m. today at Genesis Medical Center-East Rusholme Street, Davenport, becoming the first child born in the Quad-Cities in 2008. But her parents — Meagan Moen and Michael Levi, both 18, of Davenport — have not selected a name.
“I want something with an “M,” Levi said. “Both of our names begin with an “M.”
“We can’t find the name,” a tired Moen said. She wouldn’t mind a name beginning with an “M” or “I” because their first daughter, Isabella, 1, also starts with an “I.”
“We’re still deciding,” Moen said.
Nevertheless, their daughter was born, weighing 7 pounds, 8 ounces and measuring 20 inches long.
“She looks just like her big sister,” Levi said. “I think her older sister is going to be jealous.”
And after two females, “I’m hoping the next one is a boy,” he said.
The girl was born four days early, said Moen, a cashier at Steve And Barry’s University Sportswear, Davenport.
New Year’s Eve began normal enough. The couple went bowling. Moen even had a high game of 130. “Right after we left the bowling, it started,” she said of contractions. Then came almost 15 hours of labor.
Katie Herbert of Moline, a registered nurse for two years at Genesis East’s birthing unit, had just started her shift at 3 p.m.
“I knew then there were no babies born in the Quad-Cities today,” she said. “When I saw the patient was 10 centimeters, I knew it would be the first one. She was fully dilated. She was ready.”
“This is the first New Year’s Day I’ve had to work,” said Herbert, who seemed just as excited by the activities as Moen and Levi. In fact, she told them about the first baby distinction.
“They were unaware that they were the first,” Herbert said. “When I came in the room, I asked the father, ‘Did you tell (Moen) the exciting news?’ ”
He hadn’t, but soon he did tell Moen, who was shocked to learn they were the first.
“I’m happy and excited,” Moen said, although admitting that “I just got out of labor. Labor was easier (than her first child), but the contractions were harder. I spent 24 hours in labor with my first daughter and only about 15 with this one.”
Several hours later tonight, Moen and Levi said they still had not selected a name. “Maybe tomorrow,” they said.
