The knee injury suffered by Iowa basketball player Jarryd Cole in Saturday night’s game against Southeastern Louisiana ended the freshman’s season.

Iowa announced Sunday that Cole is expected to undergo surgery this week to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

He suffered the injury during the second half of Saturday’s win, landing awkwardly after a dunk that gave the Hawkeyes a 32-31 lead with 11 minutes, 55 seconds remaining.

Typically, the recovery time from an ACL injury for a                  basketball player ranges from          6-to-8 months.

“Injuries such as this are something you don’t anticipate or prepare for,’’ Iowa coach Todd Lickliter said in a statement. “I know he will attack his rehabilitation as aggressively as he has his basketball and academics through the first semester of his college career.’’

The 6-foot-7 forward from Kansas City, Mo., averages 6.6 points and 4.4 rebounds and has played in each of the Hawkeyes’ first 13 games.

He had scored four points and had four rebounds before leaving the court Saturday.

Lickliter said Cole’s presence will be missed.

“While we are going to miss not having him on the court, our concern is for him                     personally,’’ Lickliter said.

Iowa had all 11 of its scholarship players in uniform for the first time this season Saturday.
