The lone senior on the Iowa State women’s basketball team expects to learn today if her collegiate career has come to an early end.
Davenport Central grad Toccara Ross is scheduled to undergo an MRI today to determine whether she tore ligaments in her right knee during the Cyclones’ game at Minnesota on Friday night.
Ross fell to the floor at Williams Arena late in the first half of ISU’s 69-61 loss to the Golden Gophers. She returned to the bench in the second half, wearing a leg-length brace on her right leg.
After the game, Cyclones coach Bill Fennelly said he thought the injury was significant.
“It’s definitely bad. It doesn’t look good,’’ Fennelly said.
Ross has been among Iowa State’s most consistent post players this season. She is the Cyclones’ fourth-leading scorer and is second on the team in steals.
The 5-foot-9 forward who transferred to ISU from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a year ago averages 6.4 points and 3.7 rebounds for Iowa State.
“We have only four post players. One of them is probably done, and we haven’t been getting a lot out of the other three,’’ Fennelly said. “We find ourselves with a lot of work to do.’’
Fennelly said a four-guard lineup is a possibility. The Cyclones (8-2) have a chance to experiment this week. They host a four-team, round-robin tournament beginning with a game against Bowling Green on Friday.
“It’s a tough situation for us,’’ Iowa State’s Allison Lacey said. “We can’t step back. We need to use it as motivation and keep moving forward.”
