Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney criticized rival Mike Huckabee’s views toward Iran on Wednesday, part of a broader critique of his foreign policy statements.
The former Massachusetts governor is locked in a battle with Huckabee in Iowa, and he’s increasingly drawing contrasts with him.
After taking a private tour of the Rock Island Arsenal, Romney told reporters in Davenport he wasn’t impressed with a new essay Huckabee’s written for the magazine Foreign Affairs.
“I was not impressed with his perspective on foreign policy. I was not impressed with his assessment that Iran was in the posture of being a friend,” Romney said.
He also disagreed with Huckabee’s belief that relations with Iran deteriorated after President Bush included it in his “axis of evil” speech in 2002. “When George W. Bush said Iran was part of the axis of evil, he was absolutely right,” Romney said.
Romney also resurrected criticism he launched last week against Huckabee’s statement in the same Foreign Affairs article that the Bush administration had displayed an “arrogant bunker mentality.”
“I disagree with that. I think the president is a man who has acted out of a desire to do what is right for America,” Romney said.
Eric Woolson, Huckabee’s Iowa campaign manager, disputed Romney’s suggestion he is portraying Iran as a friend.
“He is, in fact, saying
the opposite,” Woolson said. Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, would prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, but also believes talks are necessary to establish better relations.
He added Romney is seeking to divert attention because it is Huckabee who stood by the president’s troop surge in Iraq from the start.
Huckabee has also said his comment about arrogance referred to the administration, not the president personally.
