Fred Thompson’s recent stop in Waverly showed everything that’s wrong with his presidential campaign. At least that’s what columnist Roger Simon thinks.
Simon, the chief columnist for The Politico, wrote Wednesday about how Thompson’s visit was a comedy of errors. The headline says it all: “Fred Thompson: Lazy as Charged.”
Thompson was scheduled to tour downtown Waverly, but he canceled the tour because of concerns about ice on the sidewalks. Instead, he made brief stops to the local newspaper and the fire station.
At the fire station, Thompson initially refused to put on the chief’s hat because, he said, “I’ve got a silly hat rule.”
Simon remarked that the hat probably didn’t seem silly to the men and women who wear them to fight fires.
“So the sum total of Thompson’s day in Waverly,” Simon wrote, “was meeting with a newspaper editor and saying nothing and then meeting about 15 people in a warm firehouse and saying nothing.”
Thompson’s campaign got a boost this week when it snagged the endorsement of U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa. But the campaign lags in polls and has been dogged by the critique — underscored by Simon’s column — that Thompson’s heart isn’t in the race.
