VenHorst named JA president

Barbara VenHorst has been named president of Junior Achievement of the Heartland, it was announced Friday.

The Quad-City native graduated from Pleasant Valley High School and received a degree in business from Drake University, Des Moines. She held various management positions at Iowa-Illinois Gas & Electric Co., the predecessor of MidAmerican Energy Co. She also served as director, investor relations for McDonald’s Corp. in Oak Brook, Ill., for nine years.

JA of the Heartland administers work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy programs through participating elementary, middle and high schools. Currently, programs involve 64,400 students in 25 counties throughout Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin.

“Barbara VenHorst’s extensive experience in finance, communications and marketing will be invaluable in helping JA fulfill its mission,” said Jim Russell, chairman of the board of directors of Junior Achievement of the Heartland. “Her leadership will help ensure the future success of JA in the Quad-Cities and surrounding communities.”

Christy Kunz served as president of Junior Achievement of the Heartland until August when she was named regional vice president of the Midwestern Region for JA Worldwide U.S. Operations. In her new position, she helps mentor 31 JA offices across the Midwest.
