New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine and Indiana U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh told Iowa audiences Thursday that Hillary Clinton is the Democrat best equipped to win a general election.
“Democrats cannot afford to lose another election,” Corzine said, according to a statement released by Clinton’s campaign. “Hillary Clinton knows what it takes to win, hit the ground running as president and start making the changes this country needs from day one.”
Bayh, who briefly explored his own candidacy for president this cycle, said Clinton has shown an ability to win in Republican-leaning areas such as his home state.
“The lesson of Hillary’s success is that she will bring core Democrats out to vote, while picking up independents and even some Republicans — exactly what she helped do last year,” Bayh said in a statement.
He pointed to her success in her Senate campaigns in Republican-leaning counties in New York.
Corzine and Bayh are two of the many high-profile surrogates that Clinton has asked to campaign for her in Iowa.
