Economists at Brown University released a study this week that says voters in Iowa and New Hampshire have up to 20 times the influence of voters in other states.

Brian Knight and Nathan Schiff developed a statistical model that shows the results in early nominating contests have a strong influence on subsequent contests.

“Clearly, the primary calendar plays a key role in the selection of the nominee,” said Knight, a

professor at the Providence, R.I., university.

He said the influence is so great that it violates the ideal of “one person-one vote.”

The economists say that John Kerry would have had a more difficult road to the Democratic Party nomination in 2004 if Iowa and New Hampshire didn’t have such a strong influence.
