There’s good news and bad news on the weather front for Quad-Citians.
The good news is the ice storm that is wreaking havoc to the southwest is slow moving and will not affect this afternoon’s commute.
The bad news is once the ice hits — around midnight tonight — it is going to build up thick and likely stick around for a few days.
“This ice storm is different than the one last Saturday,” said David Sheets, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Davenport. “This time, temperatures will not rise. They will stay low, and the ice will build up.”
Sheets (who took pains to point out his name is spelled like “sheets of ice”) said Tuesday’s morning commute should be a slippery affair.
“There could be a pretty good glaze in the morning,” he said, adding that there could be a quarter-inch of ice on surfaces including roads by dawn, with total ice accumulation adding up to a half or quarter inch before the precipitation ends, probably around sunset.
Sheets said the front has a lot of warm, moist air at the top of the clouds, which begins to fall as rain. But when it hits the arctic air mass near the surface, it turns to ice instantly.
There could be flurries or light snow on Wednesday, he added.
