MUSCATINE, Iowa — Flames from a fireplace ignited Christmas decorations at a Muscatine home Thursday evening.
Although only minimal damage was done, officials said the incident serves as a reminder to use caution this season.
The Muscatine Fire Department responded to a fire at 1100 Oakland Drive after the homeowner threw an empty pizza box onto burning logs in his fireplace, Assistant Chief Jerry Ewers said.
The box caused flames to rise out of the fireplace and ignite a garland hanging on the mantel. The fire also spread to the nearby Christmas tree. Ewers said the family was fortunate that it had a fire extinguisher on hand and was able to get the blaze under control before firefighters arrived.
He added that because the tree was artificial, the flames did not consume it as they might have if the tree had been real.
Ewers said the situation had the potential to cause more damage, and he reminds families who use fireplaces not to hang or place combustibles near the opening.
