Help is on the way.
The Iowa basketball team will work its way through the current season with 11 players, but Wednesday the program is expected to grow a bit.
Current high school and junior college recruits can put their signature on binding letters of intent when the NCAA’s early- signing period begins, and coach Todd Lickliter expects four players who have made verbal commitments to play for Iowa to sign on the bottom line that day.
Iowa State also is expected to collect four signatures Wednesday while Illinois has one known verbal commitment.
Matt Gatens, a 6-foot-5 wing player from Iowa City High, made his commitment to Iowa long before Lickliter was hired as the Hawkeyes’ coach, but the other three players expected to sign reached their decisions after Iowa’s offseason coaching change.
Two recruits, guard Anthony Tucker of Minnetonka, Minn., and center Andrew Brommer of Rosemont, Minn., will join junior college guard Jermain Davis, a Minnesota native who is at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in Lickliter’s first full Iowa recruiting class.
“We only recruit individuals we think will be a good fit and be contributors in what we like to do,” Lickliter said.
Iowa has two remaining scholarships available for its 2008 class.
