SPRINGFIELD — State officials say plans are on track to  offer parents a new way to check on how their kids are driving.

Under a law approved by the General Assembly in May, parents will be able to access teen driving records via computer beginning next year.

“Our goal is to have everything up and running on Jan. 1,” said Henry Haupt, spokesman for the Secretary of State’s office, which is in charge of issuing driver’s licenses in Illinois.

Currently, parents wanting to review those documents must visit a driver’s license station and pay $12 for a copy of the records.

In 2006, just 235 parents purchased those records.

The online system will allow parents to enter in their driver’s license numbers, their teen’s driver’s license number and then the final four digits of the child’s Social Security number.

Then, parents would enter a special identification number to access the records.

“We have multiple steps to assure the privacy of the teen’s records,” said Haupt.

The new service is part of an overhaul of teen driving laws put in place this year in response to statistics showing that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for people ages 15 to 20.

Teens will have to complete 50 hours of practice with a parent or guardian in the car, up from 25 hours. Learning permits will last nine months and no more than one passenger may be 19 or younger except for relatives.

There also are earlier curfews for young drivers.

Haupt said the new Internet-based record system is just one component of the changes.

“It works hand in hand with the new driver’s safety laws,” said Haupt.
