Three men will compete in the Feb. 5 primary to become the Democratic candidate for Rock Island County coroner.

Chief Deputy Coroner Brian Gustafson, Deputy Coroner Joel Moore and Dr. Ronald Fiscella are in the running to replace Sharon Anderson, who is retiring after serving as coroner for 19 years and will leave office in November 2008.

Gustafson has been with the coroner’s office since 1992 and became chief deputy in 2001. Moore has been a deputy coroner since 2002. Both are graduates of the Trinity College of Nursing in Moline and are registered nurses. Fiscella has operated a private family medical practice in Moline since 1980. He serves as medical director of the Trinity Regional Health System PHO.

The Rock Island County Board has three contested seats in the Democratic primary for districts 2, 4 and 19.

In District 2, incumbent Gary Freeman will be challenged by Roy Burrell, both of East Moline.

Incumbent Patrick Moreno of Silvis, Ill., will compete with Chuck Roberson of East Moline for the District 4 seat.

Rock Island residents Lauren Boswell-Loftin, the incumbent, and Glen Evans will compete for the District 19 seat.

County officeholders up for election in uncontested primaries include Circuit Clerk Lisa Bierman, Recorder Patricia Veronda, State’s Attorney Jeff Terronez and Auditor Diana Robinson. The four incumbents have filed for re-election, and no Republican candidates have filed.

In Mercer County, incumbent State’s Attorney Greg McHugh will be challenged by Daniel

Dalton in the Democratic primary. Both men are from Viola, Ill.

McHugh is seeking his third term. Dalton has a private practice in Rock Island.

In Henry County, incumbent Coroner David Johnson is being challenged in the Republican primary by Carol Wiseman.

Two men are competing in the Republican primary for a two-year term in Henry County Board District 1. They are Karol Vail, who was appointed to the seat, and Rodger Gradert.

No primary contests emerged in Whiteside or Carroll counties, where candidates for coroner, state’s attorney and circuit clerk are unopposed, as well as the recorder’s office in Whiteside County. There will be some county board races in both counties during the general election, which is scheduled Nov. 4, 2008.
