TODAY: (Updated 4:30 p.m.) Scott County Auditor Karen Fitzsimmons predicted voter turnout for today’s Davenport municipal primary would be 14 percent to 15 percent despite the near-record crowd of candidates vying for the Nov. 6 ballot.
Fitzsimmons said turnout for a municipal primary at best is about 20 percent. Earlier in the day, she thought this year’s election had generated more interest because of the number of candidates in contested races. She lowered her expectations, however, after talking to poll workers in mid-afternoon.
She did expect a slight spike in voters who stop on their way home between 5 and 7 p.m., ahead of the 8 p.m. poll-closing time.
The field will be cut from 41 candidates to 22, with 20 City Council candidates and two mayoral candidates moving on to the Nov. 6 municipal election.
Not even races in the 1st and 6th Wards, where six candidates each are vying for two spots on general election ballot could boost voter turnout, Fitzsimmons said.
“It is just kind of consistent throughout,” she said.

Earlier story: (Updated 11:59 a.m.) Scott County Auditor Karen Fitzsimmons described poll workers for the Davenport municipal primary as “moderately busy” this morning as voters pare down a near-record crowd of candidates for the Nov. 6 general election.
Fitzsimmons said turnout for a municipal primary is usually about 20 percent, but this year’s race has generated more interest.
“I expect it to be higher today because we have so many races,” she said.
The field will be cut from 41 candidates to 22, with 20 City Council candidates and two mayoral candidates moving on to the November election.
The auditor expects to have a better handle on voter turnout after talking to poll workers at mid-afternoon. However, she said turnout has been good in the 1st Ward, where voters have six candidates for the ward seat, five for alderman at-large and the three-candidate mayoral race.
Voter turnout in the 6th Ward, which tends to have good participation, also has been positive, Fitzsimmons said. The 6th Ward alderman seat has six candidates, plus voters also have the at-large seat and mayoral race to weigh in on.

Earlier story: The near-record crowd of candidates vying for spots on the Davenport City Council and in the mayor’s office will be cut in half by the end of the night.
When the dust settles at the ballot box in today’s primary election, the field of 41 will be 22 strong — with 20 council candidates and the top two mayoral vote-getters poised to campaign until the Nov. 6 general election.
There is one sure bet: The council that reconvenes in January will have a new look. Incumbents in the mayor’s office, 1st, 6th and 8th wards and one at-large seat chose not to seek re-election.
