New: (Updated: 9:02 p.m.) Hooppole, Ill. -- An accident involving a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle left two people injured Sunday afternoon just north of here.
The accident happened shortly before 2:30 p.m. Sunday, when the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received an emergency call about an accident on Illinois 78.
A truck, which was hauling a livestock trailer with cattle, collided with the passenger vehicle. The semi and the trailer were on their sides in the ditch when sheriff’s deputies arrived.
The truck driver and a passenger were transported to Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo. The female driver of the passenger vehicle was cited for failure to yield at a stop sign. One person in the passenger vehicle refused medical treatment, according to the sheriff’s office.
About 44 cattle were in the trailer. Neighboring farmers and emergency personnel gathered up most of the animals. Seven cattle were killed, and 12 had not been found late Sunday.
Assisting the Henry County Sheriff’s Office were the Hooppole Fire Department and EMS, Prophetstown EMS and Illinois State Police District 7.
The accident remains under investigation.
