Vilsack attack

Former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, a top backer of Hillary Clinton’s presidential run, took some personal shots this week at Republican contender Rudy Giuliani.

In an interview Wednesday on a New York City TV station, NY1, Vilsack insisted the former New York mayor will have some explaining to do about his personal life as he campaigns across the country. Giuliani is the GOP’s national frontrunner and a potential Clinton rival if she wins the Democratic nomination.

Vilsack chuckled when he was asked whether scandals will play a role in the 2008 presidential race. The Clinton campaign has been working to distance itself from charges swirling around indicted Democratic fundraiser Norman Hsu.

“There’s a lot that the rest of the country is going to get to know about Mayor Giuliani that the folks in New York City know, but the rest of the nation doesn’t know,” Vilsack said in the interview, which is posted on the Web site YouTube.

“I can’t even get into the number of marriages and the fact that his children, the relationship he has with his children and what kind of circumstance New York was in before September the 11th, and whether or not he even could have been re-elected as mayor prior to September the 11th,” Vilsack said.

Giuliani’s campaign had no immediate response to Vilsack’s comments. And Clinton had little to say during a conference call with Iowa reporters Thursday. She was asked whether she has talked with Vilsack about his controversial comments.

“I think he’s more than capable of speaking for himself,” Clinton said.
