A woman who went missing Thursday after police found the car she was driving in a retention pond in an industrial park in northern Davenport was found later in Iowa City.
Davenport police had conducted a water, foot and air search Thursday morning for Crystal Slach, 44, of Iowa City, near the Interstate 80 and U.S. 61 interchange.
Police said that at 7 a.m., a 53-year-old female passenger was found near Swiss Valley Farms, 247 Research Pkwy. Police were directed to a retention pond nearby, where they found a car submerged so that only the roof and the side windows were visible.
The two went to the “riverboats” and were trying to get back to Iowa City about 1:30 a.m. They were driving southbound on Brady Street north of I-80 when Slach got mad and accelerated. The car did not make the turn in the road, jumped the curb and vaulted into the pond.
The woman said she and Slach crawled out of the driver’s side window and made it to dry ground.
The two talked for a short time. Slach said she was going to walk toward the interstate, which would include scaling a 6-foot-tall fence, and hitchhike home.
That is the last the passenger saw of Slach, she said.
Captain David Struckman of the Davenport Police Department said that investigators are going to talk with Slach about the accident. The department has been assured that she is fine.
