The board governing WQPT-TV will not attempt to purchase the license and equipment of the public television station from Black Hawk College, but believes it can successfully raise the funds for the PBS station’s programming and community services.
A news release from the Greater Quad-Cities Telecommunications Corp., which oversees WQPT, said Tuesday it will make a presentation to the Black Hawk board of trustees at that group’s meeting on Thursday at the campus in Moline.
“We’ll let them digest it, then wait to hear a response from them, or maybe when they would like to get together and discuss this in greater detail,” WQPT general manager Rick Best said.
The college’s funding for the station, which has been on the Black Hawk campus since it signed on in November 1983, was cut completely with the beginning of the fiscal year. When cuts were made before the previous fiscal year, college President Keith Miller said the station did not meet the college’s goals of education and workforce training.
Best said the station’s board of directors is considering WQPT’s next move.
“We’re going to be looking at all of the options for the station — continuing the relationship with Black Hawk College, looking at potential new owners, partnerships with other organizations — it just kind of runs the gamut of everything we’re going to be exploring,” he said.
Best said the WQPT board of directors discussed funding options with the “donor community” and area business leaders, and decided that purchase of the license and equipment was not feasible.
“That did not come forth as one of the options for them to pursue,” he said.
