Three men are charged in connection with a shooting incident that ended up spanning two cities and prompting a search through a Wal-Mart Tuesday afternoon.
Charged with attempted murder and intimidation with a dangerous weapon are Doviono Detreese Gray, 20, Rock Island; Michael Christopher Lewis, 20, Moline; and Ralphael Darnell Gray, 22, Rock Island. All three are being held in the Scott County Jail.
Bettendorf Police Chief Phil Redington gave an account of the shooting that occurred at 1:47 p.m.:
Two vehicles came to a stop at the intersection of Kimberly and Middle roads in Bettendorf. A man got out of the passenger side of the front vehicle and fired a handgun at least three times. One of the shots hit the car behind, which was occupied by two adults and a 9-month-old child. No one was hurt.
A witness called the police and gave the police a description of the vehicle and which way it went.
The suspects traveled to Wal-Mart on Elmore Avenue in Davenport, where they parked the car and fled. Again, witnesses assisted police with descriptions and location, Redington said, until the three men were apprehended.
Police initially thought four people were involved, so they searched Wal-Mart and a nearby field with help from the Davenport Police Department and the Scott County Sheriff’s Department.
They now think that three people were involved in the incident, Redington said.
Police recovered a green Chrysler with Illinois license plates from the parking lot.
The car, Redington said, contained a weapon. Officers continue to investigate what prompted the incident, he added.
Redington appreciates the help witnesses offered.
“Thanks to the citizens involved, we quickly apprehended the three of them,” he said.
