Pregame concerts outside the i wireless Center will help launch the American Hockey League Quad-City Flames on Oct. 6.

When the team takes the ice about 7 p.m., Flames officials hope they will be greeted by an arena turned red.

The hope is that the  “River of Red” promotion along the banks of the Mississippi will mimic the “Sea of Red’’ promotions fans of the NHL parent club Calgary Flames have made famous.

On “Sea of Red” nights, the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary is awash in red worn by loyal fans.

“We hope it is like what happens with the big club,’’ Flames president Tim Taylor said. “It is red.”

The Flames will award red rally towels to the first 5,000 fans who enter the building, which Taylor, and the Flames ownership team hope the place will be filled to capacity for a game against the Rockford IceHogs.

The opener and the next day’s matinee home game vs. the Peoria Rivermen will be preceded by “Fan Fest” events outside the building beginning at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

That day, the bands Blue Rage and Missing Persons, brought in by the i wireless Center and a pair of corporate sponsors, will conduct concerts starting a 4:45 p.m. and 5:40 p.m. A hot dog eating contest also will be conducted.

Sunday’s 3 p.m. faceoff will include a drawing for two Hannah Montana tickets and a beer garden featuring the day’s NFL football games.

Future Flames promotions include an appearance by the San Francisco 49ers cheerleaders on Feb. 10 and a Feb. 16 appearance by the Quick Change Artists, who appeared on the summer TV program, “America’s Got Talent.”

The Flames will open training camp Sunday at the Quad-City Sports Center in Davenport. A start time is TBA.

The team announced Monday that the scheduled unveiling of the new team’s new jerseys has been delayed.
