Two area school districts have received funding as part of the Illinois Zero Waste Schools Grant Program. Rockridge School District in Taylor Ridge received $20,000 and Wethersfield High School in Kewanee received $3,696.
The grants, which are intended to motivate schools to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste, are administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and come as part of the Opportunity Returns initiative. Rockridge will use the money to help two schools reach a goal of zero waste.
Rockridge junior and senior high schools currently recycle fibers and printer cartridges, but the expanded program will include aluminum cans, steels, Nos. 1 and 2 plastics, milk cartons, colored and clear glass and books. Both schools practice two-sided copying and one note per family policies. The cafeteria has reusable utensils and the schools regularly hold locker cleanouts.
Wethersfield currently only recycles printer cartridges. The purchase of classroom and office recycling containers will expand the school’s recycling program and, additionally, dry erase boards for classrooms will be purchased to greatly reduce the volume of waste going to the landfill.
