U.S. Sen. Joe Biden has agreed to take part in a Sept. 20 presidential forum at the Adler Theatre in Davenport, the sponsors said Wednesday.
Divided We Fail, a coalition of AARP, labor and business, is organizing the forum, which will center on health care and financial security issues and will be broadcast live nationally on PBS from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
PBS host and anchor Judy Woodruff will moderate.
U.S. Sens. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., Chris Dodd, D-Conn., former U.S. Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson have already said they will take part.
Biden, D-Del., joined the group Wednesday.
U.S. Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign announced earlier this month that he would limit his participation in forums through the rest of this year, meaning he won’t be participating.
Two candidates who have been included in other debates, former U.S. Sen. Mike Gravel of Alaska and U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, weren’t invited to the forum because they didn’t meet the coalition’s criteria, which included having a campaign office in the state. Neither has an office in Iowa.
The Quad-City Times and DavenportOne are local partners for the event, which is free and open to the public.
Ticket information is available at aarp.org/ia or by calling toll-free 1-877-926-8300 before Sept. 13.
Divided We Fail, AARP and Iowa Public Television are also hosting a similar forum for the Republican candidates, which will be Oct. 25 in Sioux City.
