Robbery charges against a Silvis, Ill., man were filed in federal court Tuesday.
Albert J. Brooks, 24, of 1112 12th St., is accused of robbing American Bank, 3730 18th Ave., Rock Island, on Aug. 20 and the Silvis Hy-Vee, 2001 5th St. on Aug. 18.
Brooks was arrested on a Silvis police warrant in the 1500 block of 9th Street in Rock Island Aug. 21 after officers received a tip on his whereabouts.
Brooks was originally charged in state court but is now charged in U.S. District Court, Central District of Illinois, Rock Island, with obstruction of commerce by robbery and bank robbery.
According to the charges, when Brooks robbed the Hy-Vee, he went to a customer service representative to ask about cashing a personal check. Brooks told the employee he needed to wait for someone to bring his personal identification and then spent two hours waiting in the customer service area, an affidavit filed in court states.
At some point, the employee turned away and when the employee turned back around, Brooks was at the customer service counter with a knife in his hand. He demanded all of the store money the employee had and left with $210, the affidavit alleges.
A Silvis police officer familiar with Brooks reviewed footage from store security cameras and identified him, the affidavit states.
During the bank robbery, Brooks allegedly handed a teller a note stating, “This is a robbery. Casually hand me a one inch stack of 20s, 50s and 100s or I’ll lite this (place) up.”
The teller allegedly handed Brooks approximately $740 in cash.
During two separate interviews with Rock Island and Silvis police, Brooks admitted robbing the Hy-Vee and the bank, the affidavit reports.
Brooks made his initial appearance in federal court Monday and was ordered to remain in detention while awaiting a ruling from a grand jury.
