Megan Rocker writes that her not being caught in the Minneapolis bridge collapse (Aug. 10 column) evokes the saying “there but for the grace of God.” I have always been profoundly troubled by that saying. If those of us who avoid a tragedy do so by ‘the grace of God,’ what do we say to those who were devastated by it? Is Gods’ grace withdrawn from them? Did God turn God’s back on those who suffer?
That is not the God in whom I believe! Ms. Rocker was lucky, which is wonderful for her and those who love her. I believe that God was busy that day holding the suffering and dying, surrounding those caught up in this tragedy with love.
