Officials at Jumer’s Casino Rock Island are not taking it as a bad sign that the Illinois Gaming Board has again delayed voting on their plans for a new casino complex.

The board met in a closed session Monday in Joliet, Ill., and met again Tuesday in open session. On the agenda for Tuesday’s public meeting was a final vote on Jumer’s request for approval of its proposed casino at Interstate 280 and Illinois 92 in Rock Island.

“Due to the volume of information we sent at the beginning of the month, they did elect to table the matter until next Monday,” said Bill Renk, Jumer’s director of sales and marketing. “I think it was a positive meeting. There were no great concerns expressed by the board.”

One concern expressed earlier this year by Board Chairman Aaron Jaffe was that Jumer’s officials were taking considerable time to submit financial documents specifically requested by the board. When Jumer’s failed to supply all the information requested, but still asked for final approval of their plans in April, Jaffe was especially critical.

“Maybe they have their act together, but they haven’t conveyed it to the board,” he said.

Gene O’Shea, a spokesman for the Gaming Board, warned last week that it was possible — even likely, perhaps — that the board would again decline to take action, saying there were “some issues” that needed to be discussed in closed session.

Renk said that Jumer’s officials who traveled to Joliet Tuesday were “pleased” with the way the meeting went and said they knew a decision “wasn’t guaranteed.”

No one was available at the Gaming Board office Tuesday to say whether Monday’s meeting is specific to Jumer’s or whether the board has other business to discuss.

Renk said the board had “nothing of great concern over the project” and simply wanted more time to study several boxes of financial information provided by Jumer’s.

“We’ll see what next Monday brings,” he said. “Our representatives will be there, of course.”
