Sunday night was a night for crashes, dozens of caution flags and mud sprayed all around.
It also was a night for drivers from the Quad-City area to take home trophies during the midseason championships at the Quad-City Raceway in East Moline.
For Milan’s Jake Waterman, the cautions worked to his benefit as he won the Class B-Modified race.
Because of a five-caution limit for races, Waterman’s race was shortened from 20 laps to 11. The funny part, to Waterman, was that he only took part in the race to “work the bugs out” of his car.
“This was my first night racing in this new car,” he said. “We spent 17 hours scaling it down and getting it ready for racing. I came here tonight to get the bugs out, and it ended up being a good race car. I like to think I could have won the full race, but I am grateful for them all the same.”
Silvis’ Kevin Dickey finished second in the B-Mods race.
Jeff Morris of Long Grove, Iowa, won the Class A-Modifieds race, a 25-lap venture.
“This car was a new one for us this year,” he said. “We had been struggling the first five or six races this season with it. The last four we have had two seconds and two firsts, though, so I guess we got things turned around now. We’ll just have to see if we can keep things going.”
In the other four championships, four other cities in the area had victors.
The Street Stocks race was won by Bob Henry of Colona, Ill., despite his crash before the checkered flag.
The reason for his victory, according to raceway rules agreed upon before the season, was that 80 percent of the cars had passed the white flag before the race-ending crash. East Moline’s Chris Hambright was second.
The Late Model trophy was won by Bettendorf’s Rob Boland.
He started the race primarily fending off Colona’s Jason Bahrs but soon had East Moline’s Shawn Mulvany and Moline’s Mike Murphy close on his tail.
During the Late Model class’s first heat race, there was a five-car pileup, but nobody was injured.
Wade Dahl of Blue Grass, Iowa, won the 4-cylinder race. He blew away the competition.
The final victor of the night was Greg Rossell of Knoxville, Ill. He won the Modified Lites race, fending off the persistent Shon Sanders of East Moline.
