Rain should help cool things down

If you’re tired of temperatures in the 90s, some cool news is headed your way.
For a while, at least.
Andy Ervin, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, Davenport, says a brief respite from the heat will arrive today after the season’s first hot spell.
“Sunday was the sixth day in a row for temperatures in the 90s,” Ervin said. “The high Sunday was 94, the same as the high Saturday.”
Although the temperatures seemed uncomfortably warm, no high-temperature records were broken in the Quad-Cities.
“Our records are already pretty warm,”Ervin said. “The lower 90s and lower 100s are the records this time of year. Although it’s been hot and increasingly humid each day, we’ve broken no records.”
A slow-moving weather pattern has kept the Quad-Cities in a high-pressure cooker for several days. “Day by day, under this type of pattern this time of year, we built up a little more humidity and heat each day,” he said.
“If you look back about a week ago, we saw temperatures in the upper 70s, and the day after that, upper 80s. And then we entered a streak of 90-degree temperatures ... up and up and up.
“The lucky part is we have a cool front arriving today,” he said. “That brings the best chance for rain we’ve had in quite some time.”
Highs today should be in the middle 80s except for east of the Quad-Cities, where highs will be in the upper 80s and possibly lower 90s, Ervin said.
“We’re looking for more clouds and a good chance for showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight,” he said.
That will add to the scanty rainfall the Quad-Cities has collected this month: The total so far is 1.94 inches, which is 0.73 inches below normal, Ervin said.
“If you look at actual day-to-day precipitation, we’ve had dry conditions across the area since the 4th of June,” he said.
Highs should remain in the 80s on Tuesday.
“But it’s not going to take too long to get back up into the middle to upper 80s for the remainder of the week. Each day will be a little bit warmer,” Ervin said.
Chances for rain look slim for the rest of the week, he said.
