They sang, they interpreted and, most of all, they educated.

A trio of jazz experts provided a cool afternoon of participation and learning Sunday at the River Music Experience where 20 adults and children joined in.

The Third Sunday Jazz Matinee and Workshop featured Lois Deloatch, from North Carolina, with guitarist Curtis Robinson, of Chicago, and Donald Meade, jazz historian and musician from East Moline. Polyrhythms, an umbrella cultural organization that celebrates music, dance and the spoken word, and the River Music Experience present the the “Third Sunday” events.

“What we have here today is an interpreter of the music,” said Nate Lawrence, director of Polyrhythms. “This is our sixth one this year. (The events) are very informational and interactive.”

Lawrence introduced Deloatch, who performs and presents programs all over the country. She asked how many members of the audience were familiar with jazz music.

She taught the participants a way to ensure they have “enough air to be able to sing,” and they joined her in singing a little of Miles Davis’ “All Blues.”

Meade told the group that musicians “have never liked that name, ‘jazz.’ It’s a label. It’s a box.

“Jazz is about freedom. It speaks to the human experience,” Meade said, adding that “It’s the only music where everybody solos.”

Robinson said many jazz artists “reharmonize” works,  and performed an example of that with “This Old Man (Knick-Knack Paddywhack)” adding a more complex harmony to the riff the second time around.

“Jazz is a way of interpreting music,” Deloatch said.

The next Third Sunday Jazz Matinee & Workshop will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 15, at the River Music Experience. Cost is $3 for students, $5 for adults, and $10 per person for the matinee performance at 6 p.m. that day. Featured performer will be Lenora “Zenzalai” Helm with Brandon McCune, John Price and Manty Ellis.
