Illinois center Shaun Pruitt’s flirtation with the NBA came to an end Sunday.
Pruitt issued a statement through the Illinois sports information office indicating that he had withdrawn his name from consideration for the 2007 NBA Draft earlier in the day.
“At this stage in my career, I feel it would be best to return to the U of I men’s basketball program and help my teammates prepare for another winning season,’’ Pruitt said.
The 6-foot-10 center reached the decision to return for his senior season after what he called “a very intense and exciting spring.’’
“I’ve had the opportunity to test my skills and abilities against several draft-eligible players from across the country and overseas,’’ Pruitt said. “I’ve also learned a lot about the game of basketball on the next level.’’
A third-team all-Big Ten selection last season, Pruitt averaged 11.4 points and 7.5 rebounds last season for the Fighting Illini.
He announced his intention to test the draft waters on April 24, indicating then that he was leaving the door open for a return.
Illinois coach Bruce Weber supported Pruitt’s decision, saying that “he will be a better player by having gone through the process.’’
