 Class 2A

Cedar Rapids Kennedy 3, Sioux City North 2 (3-0 shootout)

The Sioux City North Stars (11-3) had their chances to advance to Friday’s semis, but Cedar Rapids Kennedy (18-1) kept coming back. In the end, it took a 3-0 shootout to determine the winner, after two overtime periods and an extended rain delay.

Stars goalkeeper, sophomore Taylor Culver stopped 31 shots before the decisive shootout where she didn’t stop a single shot.

The shot that sent the Cougars on to face Ames in Friday’s semis was made by sophomore forward Jade Grimm. She also scored the first Kennedy goal with a shot that skimmed just below the top goal post and in.

“It feels really good to pull this off,” Grimm said. “It was amazing to score the winning penalty shot. The Stars really gave us a good game but our goalkeeper Rachel Spellerburg came up big, especially in the shootout. I am very proud of how we kept coming back and won.”

Class 1A

Pella 3, Nevada 0

Pella (15-3) sent the Cubs (15-6) packing. The Cubs tried to play rough, (committing nine fouls to two), but it only took sophomore Heidi Vander Molen’s goal in the 20th minute to put Pella ahead to stay.

The Lady Dutch followed that up with a goal by junior Halley Brillhart in the 57th minute, assisted by senior Amanda Miller, and another goal by Vander Molen, this time assisted by senior Sarah Schuring, to advance Pella to today’s semifinals.

Bishop-Heelan 4, Waverly-Shell Rock 2

The Bishop-Heelan Crusaders (15-4) came to the state finals seeded seventh. Their first opponent, Waverly-Shell Rock (18-2) was seeded second. The Crusaders didn’t let the seeding difference affect them, though. They used a freshman as a key part in pulling off the upset.

Freshman forward Taylor Jennings assisted on the Crusaders’ first goal, a shot by junior Hannah Maly from about 30 yards out early in the second half. She then scored their final goal, a dribbler that rolled into the left corner of the goal in the 65th minute, to put the Go-Hawks away.

“Today was pretty awesome,” Jennings said. “This wasn’t my best game but it was good enough to move us forward. I do feel confident about our next game, after upsetting Waverly.”

Norwalk 2, Dubuque Wahlert 0

Dubuque Wahlert’s trip to this year’s tournament marked nine straight trips. Norwalk (18-2) knocked the Golden Eagles (13-5) out of Muscatine with a shutout.

Wahlert had the first chances to score but an early goal was called back after it was ruled the ball was knocked out of Norwalk goalie Kourtney Arnold’s hands. Six minutes after the call, the Warriors proceeded to score a goal as senior Jennie Clark slide-kicked the ball into the goal to put Norwalk on top.

Norwalk junior Jordan Reece’s rebound score off Wahlert goalie Erin Dolehide in the 75th minute sealed the deal.

“We passed the best we have passed all year in that first half,” Warriors coach Alan Brommel said. “The 1-0 lead we have at halftime was huge. The wind worked to our advantage in the second half; but I am very proud of our girls. Wahlert has a strong team.”
