Modern Woodmen of America will present its 2007 Community Service Award to Jim Horstmann during a breakfast ceremony today at Abbey Station in Rock Island. The presentation begins at 7:15 a.m.
The Rock Island-based fraternal financial services organization will honor Horstmann for his volunteer leadership roles in the Quad-Cities.
The retired Augustana College administrator has volunteered with the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend, Marriage and Family Counseling and Trinity Visiting Nurses.
He serves as the free enterprise foundation/individual giving director for Junior Achievement of the Heartland, also a volunteer role.
As part of the annual award, Modern Woodmen presents $5,000 in the recipient’s name to a charity of his or her choice. Horstmann designated Alternatives for the Older Adult and the Boys and Girls Club to share the grant.
He also will receive an engraved Waterford crystal clock to represent his time and dedication to community volunteer service. The award program helps support local charities and encourage community service involvement.
Modern Woodmen created the award in 1997 to mark the retirement of then-president William Foster, who was the first recipient.
Other recipients include Dr. Richard “Bud” Phillis; Clyde Schoeck, the former CEO and president of Modern Woodmen; Michael Bauer; Thomas and Karen Getz; Peter Lardner; Gene Blanc; Joe Whitty; Don Wooten, and Mark Schwiebert.
