Library to host annual scavenger hunt

Teen detectives can come to the Bettendorf Public Library from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday to hunt down clues and crack a secret code as part of its annual scavenger hunt.

The event, which offers a yet-to-be-determined prize, promotes the library’s summer reading program. Middle and high school students can attend. They will have to use library resources to find the answers to questions.

To register for the scavenger hunt, call (563) 344-4178, stop by the library’s Youth Services Department or go online to www.bettendorflibrary.com/teen/events.htm. Web site registrations will be accepted until 9 p.m. today. The event is limited to 24 teens.

Parents can drop their children off at the library lobby and pick them up at the end of the evening.

Extension offers video link with soldiers

Illinois families will have the chance to visit face-to-face with loved ones in Iraq from July 12-13 via the University of Illinois videoconferencing system.

Families must register online at www.seeyoursoldier.uiuc.edu no later than 5 p.m. June 10 to be eligible for a time slot. Reservations will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.

Soldiers at Camp Al Asad (Air Force) and Camp Taji/Cooke (Army) will be able to see and talk with family members in private, 30-minute sessions. The free videoconferencing will take place at Northwest Regional Extension Office at 4550 Kennedy Drive, Suite 1, East Moline.

When a family has registered, the military will alert the service member about the opportunity to visit with friends and family, and the time and date of the Internet transmission. If the soldier’s duty schedule can accommodate the visit, family members will be assigned a time for their 30-minute session.

Walcott, Iowa

Memorial balloons to be released

The sky over Walcott, Iowa, should be colorful for a few minutes Sunday. That’s when people can celebrate the lives of their deceased loved ones by attaching their names to the strings of colorful helium-filled balloons, then releasing them at Victory Park.

“Remembrance Day” is being organized by members of Lambda Phi Sorority of Walcott.

“My son was killed about four years ago by a drunk driver,” said Elaine Arp, incoming president of the sorority. “On the first anniversary of his death, my immediate family went to the cemetery and we released balloons into the air in his honor.”

Arp said her grandson was having difficulty dealing with her father’s death and the balloon release helped him.

Participants should gather at the park at 4:30 p.m. to write a message. After brief services by the Rev. Connie Markle of Calvary United Methodist Church, Walcott, the balloon release will take place at 5 p.m.
