Police seek driver of vehicle that hit house in Davenport

Davenport police still are looking for the driver of a sport utility vehicle who fled after running into a house on Waverly Road early Monday, leaving the Jeep’s motor running.

A crash investigator has been assigned to the follow-up on the 1 a.m. crash at 607 Waverly Road, Lt. Mike Venema said Tuesday. The officer has several leads to the identity of the driver, but no arrest has been made.

Monday’s crash is more high-profile than the 120 hit-and-run reports received monthly by Davenport Police Department’s crash investigation unit.

Carl Harms, who lives in the house, was asleep when he heard a boom. Awakened, he smelled antifreeze and saw headlights shining through the doorway of a

spare bedroom.

He discovered a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee had crashed into the house and the driver had fled. No one in the home was injured, but police don’t know the physical status of the driver.

Harms said he didn’t get a look at the SUV driver.
