(Updated: 4:38 p.m.) MAQUOKETA, Iowa — Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a fatal crash that happened this morning on Rockdale Road, two miles north of Maquoketa.

Deputy Steve Schroeder said the name of the driver is being withheld pending notification of relatives.

He said deputies were called to a single-vehicle accident Saturday morning at 22357 Rockdale Road. Deputies think the accident happened after 2 a.m., but the vehicle was not discovered until 7 a.m.

The investigation showed a 1995 Eagle was being driven west on Rockdale Road and went off the north shoulder. It traveled 478 feet in the ditch, rolling over and coming to rest on its top. Schroeder said the man was partially ejected through the sun roof of the car.

Jackson County Medical Examiner Dr. Paul Koob pronounced the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle dead at the scene.

Maquoketa Rescue Squad and Jackson County Regional Health Center Ambulance assisted.
