Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, while criticizing Congress for the new war spending bill, pitched a plan Friday aimed at helping returning veterans.

Edwards, a former senator, was touring several eastern Iowa towns this weekend.

During his trip, he called for boosting funding for veterans health care, better screening for post-traumatic stress disorder, more pay for military men and women and a “coming home” plan for returning veterans.

“It’s important, as opposed to just words,” he said.

Edwards has been among the most aggressive of Democratic candidates in pushing for an end to the war. In an interview, he said Congress should continue to send a war spending bill to President Bush that includes a timetable for a troop withdrawal.

The Democratic leadership in Congress said Friday that, despite their distaste for the bill, they think it will push the war closer to an end. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said President Bush’s Iraq policy “is going to begin to unravel now.”

Edwards, however, disagreed. He said the bill does nothing to push the war closer to a conclusion.
