Sporting pink jerseys in honor of teammate Ann Kincaid’s deceased mother, Bettendorf found a way to beat host Pleasant Valley 1-0 on Thursday in a showdown for the Mississippi Athletic Conference girls soccer championship.

Both teams entered the match, postponed from April 26, with 8-0 conference records. Even though Pleasant Valley (13-4, 8-1 MAC), ranked eighth in the final statewide Class 2A girls poll, had fewer fouls, more corner kicks and more shots, the second-ranked Bulldogs (16-1, 9-0) prevailed to clinch their first conference crown since 2003.

Fittingly, Bettendorf senior forward Ann Kincaid scored the lone goal that won the game and title for her team, and her mom, who passed away May 16.

“We wanted to win this for Teresa (Kincaid),” Bulldogs senior goalie Emily Voigt said. “Some of us noticed that after Ann scored that goal (a shot from the left side of the goal that bounced off the upper right goal post with 22 minutes, 10 seconds left) that the rain let up. It was like Teresa was looking down on us today. We will probably play PV again in the regional, but this team really stuck in there until the end today to win this title.”

Kincaid said her team wearing the jerseys and playing in her mother’s honor added to the motivation of coming to Pleasant Valley and winning the MAC title.

“It always helps when you are motivated by something, and this was the best motivation I have ever had, playing this for my mom,” Kincaid said. “My mom used to love to come watch us girls play. I know this win would have meant a lot to her.”
