KEWANEE, Ill. — Residents of Kewanee helped police capture an alleged armed robber Wednesday as their phone calls reporting the man’s whereabouts allowed officers to surround and capture him.
Kewanee Police Chief Jim Dison said in a news release that at 2:25 p.m. police received a 911 call of an armed robbery in progress at Jo Jo’s Convenience Store at 501 N. Main St.
The suspect wearing no shirt and brandishing a silver-colored revolver, fled the store on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, Dison said.
As the man fled the area, numerous people began calling in the man’s whereabouts, he said. Because of those phone calls, officers were able to find the man and arrest him after a short foot pursuit.
Christopher T. Pitchford, 26, of Kewanee, was being held Wednesday night in the Henry County Jail on a preliminary charge of armed robbery.
“This arrest again demonstrates the importance of our citizens working together with the police,” Dison said. “We are grateful for their assistance and thankful that no one was injured in this incident.”
