WAPELLO, Iowa — A second asbestos test has revealed the Wapello High School Auditorium apparently does not have the hazardous substance.
One sample in tests taken last fall was positive for asbestos, throwing renovation plans for the auditorium into turmoil. The positive test caused delays in planning for the renovation that eventually forced the School Board to replace the project architect.
New architect David Metzger decided to recheck the first asbestos test and was surprised to discover the new results. He told the school board on Thursday that another test will be scheduled to make the latest finding conclusive.
In the meantime, Metzger said he will continue to work on developing conceptual plans for renovating the auditorium. He will schedule a meeting with a citizen advisory committee that has previously worked on the renovation to review an earlier set of proposals it had developed.
A tentative schedule distributed during Thursday’s meeting indicated officials hope to have working drawings and specifications completed by Nov. 15.
Once those are approved by the state, they would be distributed to contractors, with a contract being awarded about Feb. 28, 2008. Construction would begin about March 15 and hopefully be completed by Aug. 15, 2008.
