A Davenport man is scheduled for trial July 30 on involuntary manslaughter and other charges for the death of a Park View, Iowa, man who suffered a head injury in a parking lot confrontation at Bettendorf’s Cumberland Square in March.

Along with involuntary manslaughter, Stanley Speed, 26, also is charged with assault causing serious injury and willful injury causing serious injury.

Police say Speed and Joshua Davis, 26, got in a confrontation March 10 in the Cumberland Square parking lot. Police say Davis was walking with a woman in the parking lot near CVS Pharmacy when the confrontation occurred. Speed was driving in the lot, got out of his vehicle and assaulted Davis.

Davis, who suffered a serious head injury, died two days later. On May 11, Speed’s attorney, David Treimer, filed a notice of self-defense as a defense at trial.

Involuntary manslaughter and assault causing serious injury are Class D felonies punishable by up to five years in prison. The assault charge carries mandatory jail time but doesn’t have a minimum sentence. Willful injury is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
