TIPTON, Iowa — Tipton’s fire station referendum failed Tuesday by a vote of 260 to 326.
That is 44.4 percent in favor and 55.6 percent opposed. The $2.3 million bond issue was to replace a fire station that is barely long enough to hold the fire trucks. One truck has to sit outside, and the rescue boat is stored in the ambulance garage.
Disappointed volunteer fire department members who received the results at the Cedar County Courthouse quickly rallied, and soon asked when another referendum could be held. They were told it could take place again in six months.
However, the City Council would have to approve conducting another bond issue referendum.
