TODAY: (Updated 6:05 p.m.) The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill today to redesignate Davenport’s federal courthouse for former U.S. Rep. Jim Leach.
Leach, a Republican, is a Davenport native. He served 30 years in Congress, most of it representing the Iowa Quad-Cities, but lost a re-election bid last year.
The House passed the measure on a voice vote.
U.S. Reps. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, and David Loebsack, D-Iowa, sponsored the bill. It was Loebsack who defeated Leach last November.
The courthouse, at 131 E. 4th St., will be redesignated the “James A. Leach United States Courthouse.”
Such designations generally involve the placement of a plaque in a prominent place in the building, according to the Congressional Research Service.
In March, President Bush signed legislation designating the post office on 11th Street in Rock Island for former U.S. Rep. Lane Evans, D-Ill. A similar bill honoring Leach has been introduced in the Senate by U.S. Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Tom Harkin, D-Iowa.
