In response to “Eager to be Reagan’s heir, not Bonzo’s cousin,” covered on page A3 of the May 7 Quad-City Times, I could not help but be disappointed. A quick recap for those who missed it: a current Newsweek survey about views on the origin of human life showed 48 percent of subjects chose a creationist view (God created man), 30 percent favored evolution steered by God (Intelligent Design), and only 13 percent of the sample chose evolution by itself.
It is disheartening to think that nearly half of our modern nation does not believe that evolution took place. The evidence to the contrary is everywhere. Traces of evolution can be observed throughout the entire fossil record. Anatomical and genetic similarities between species strongly support evolution. We can see the very process continuing around us today, an example being bacteria evolving to become increasingly drug-resistant. Though evolution may still be labeled as a theory, its impressive set of evidence and nearly ubiquitous acceptance in the scientific community render Darwin’s theory as one of the fundamental laws of biology.
The results of this survey, if accurate, convey a clear lack of education. I venture to suggest that a future study would find that the more education an individual has received, the more likely he or she would be to support evolution. Evolution has been controversial Darwin introduced it; yet, I would have expected 148 years of convincing subsequent research to have cemented the principle into the minds of modern society. What a shame.
