(Updated 11:48 a.m.) Iowa Gov. Chet Culver ordered today that all flags in the state be flown at half-staff Thursday, from 8 a.m. until sunset, in honor of U.S. Army Pvt. First Class Katie M. Soenksen, 19, of Davenport.
She died Wednesday while serving in Iraq.
The order applies to all U.S. and state flags under the control of the state, including the Capitol Building and flag displays in the Capitol Complex and all public buildings, grounds and facilities. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions also are encouraged to fly the flag at half staff that day as a sign of respect.
