The owner of eight television stations, including Quad-Cities’ TV affiliates KLJB-TV18 and KGCW-TV26, died Saturday at his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Milton Grant, president and CEO of Grant Communications, was called “one of the last individual owners of a television station group” in a news release from the company. Grant purchased KLJB, a Fox affiliate, in September 1991. KJMH in Burlington, Iowa, which eventually became CW affiliate KGCW, was purchased in March 1996. His company also owned stations in Roanoke and Lynchburg, Va., Huntsville, Ala., and LaCrosse-Eau Claire, Wis.

He was in his early 80s.

A Washington, D.C., native, Grant was a veteran of the Office of Strategic Services of the U.S. Army, serving for three years in north Africa and Italy during World War II. He began his broadcast career while a student at New York University, and in the 1950s was the host of “The Milt Grant Show,” a live, daily music-and-variety series on WTTG in Washington, before turning to management. He had previously owned and operated stations in Washington, Houston, Miami, Philadelphia and Chicago.

He is survived by two daughters and a son. His son, Thomas Grant, will become vice president of Grant Broadcasting. Drew Pfeiffer, who had been corporate director of programming and promotion for more than 25 years, will replace Grant as CEO.
